Open Call for designs
:
A Flag for National Interest?

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: 5pm MONDAY 10th October

'National Interest' is the overall theme of ArtTrail Festival 2011, running from 18th November - 4th December. One of the project sites is the Former Government Buildings, Sullivan's Quay - including TACTIC Gallery on the Second Floor, and exterior areas of the building. Due to the history and location of the building, and its current use as studios, the three vacant flagpoles above the entrance canopy suggested the possibility of an additional project. Now the owners of the building, BAM Construction, have agreed to allow the flagpoles be used for the festival. Three new flags will be selected, printed, and flown for the duration of the ArtTrail Festival.

The Irish Tricolour was designed at a particular moment in Ireland's development, and adopted as the National flag at a later date. If it seeks to represent an ideal situation - peace between the 'Green' and the 'Orange' - rather than a cultural or social history, perhaps it is more a flag of 'National Interest' than of 'National Identity'. Is there cause now to re-examine this flag, to update our National agenda, or to make an entirely new statement of intent?

We invite draft or print-ready design proposals for a new flag.

3 designs will be selected and digitally printed 6ft x 3ft.
Printing will be single-sided on polyester, and the reverse of the image will be visible on the reverse side.
As this will be digitally printed, images and detailed patterns and elements are possible. Proposals that include additional embellishments or hand-made alterations after printing could also be accepted, with consideration to the outdoor location and weather at this time of year. Designs could also be custom shapes taken out of the standard rectangle.

HOW TO ENTER:
Entry is by email only, and is open to anyone. There is no geographical restriction, age limit, or entry fee.

To enter, please send an email to [email protected] before the deadline with "FLAG PROPOSAL" as the Subject, and including:
- up to 3 designs reduced in size to be suitable for printing A4, attached as high quality files, ideally PDF or JPEG, and compatible with Mac systems. (If you do not have access to these formats, please send your artwork in the best quality and format you have.)
- A short description explaining your design (max 100 words), in the body of the email.
- Your full contact details including your name; a mobile, Skype or landline number; and a postal address.

IF YOUR DESIGN IS SELECTED:
If selected, ArtTrail will contact you to request the artwork in ai, eps or pdf format for PC (with font converted to outlines). It will need to be 300dpi and as large as possible to minimise loss of quality in any enlargement. These are the requirements from the printers. Full size files can be transferred with YouSendIt , DropBox, or other online service for large files.

If you do not have access to these programs, please have your artwork available in the highest quality and format you have, and we would work with our graphic designer to make any adjustments needed.

SELECTION PANEL:

The selection will be made by a panel including representatives from ArtTrail, TACTIC Gallery, and Sample Studios.

A few conditions:
All accepted entries will be added to an online gallery on the ArtTrail website, including the entrant's name.
ArtTrail reserve the right to screen entries due to the public nature of the project, and the broad general audience.
Selection decision will be be announced to entrants by Monday 17th October, and then announced publicly on 18th November when the flags are flown for the first time.
The selected designers will be offered their flag after the festival.
The selectors decisions are final, and no negotiation will be entered into.
By entering, you agree to these conditions.
