Paper Visual Art Journal

In August Stephen McGlynn invited Paper Visual Art Journal to be resident in Cork based art project The Guesthouse. During their stay they produced a Cork based print edition of their journal and invited us to write a piece about TACTIC. I had been a follower of their online journal for some time but,u nfortunately, I never got my hands on a print copy.

Off the top of my head I think sounded like.........

Earlier this year a number of artists established a studio group within a building that was once the Revenue Commissioners and FAS offices in Cork city centre. Property developer, BAM Construction, who seems to have an interest, or at least a tolerance, in the arts, now owns the building. Currently the first two floors are rented to the Crawford Art College and another houses Sample-Studios and TACTIC. Over the last year numerous exhibitions and arts festivals have occupied other parts of the building. Currently the developers have been given the go ahead to develop the former site of the Beamish & Crawford brewery into a cultural, entertainment and retail centre.

When the studio group was up and running, there was an area suitable for a gallery. We were both renting studios and were not busy with the managing the studio group so we approached the board with the idea to run the gallery space. We are both visual artists and graduates of Limerick School of Art & Design but have a variety of experience. It so happened that we worked well together and could bring different skills to the space.

We decided early on that it would be interesting to offer the space as an opportunity for curatorial projects. We felt that many artist led galleries work with artists presenting solo shows and fewer opportunities seemed available for curators. We are not interested purely in individuals with curatorial backgrounds, in the last 10 years there has been a blurring of the boundary of artist and curator. We would like to blur some more boundaries in the cultural industries and invite artists, curators, filmmakers, writers, musicians, scientists, researchers and academics to the programme. Our name TACTIC stemmed from this idea, of a tactical plan to create links between different areas.

We are very lucky that Sample-Studios cover the costs of rent, council rates and electricity. In return TACTIC will periodically host members’ shows. In addition to these shows, it is beneficial for studio members to have outside curators come into the space where they work. We already have Art Trail Festival confirmed for the space and filmmaker Max Le Cain will be curating an exhibition of experimental video art to be included as part of the Cork Film Festival later this year.

Our next guest curator will be Cork based filmmaker and critic Maximilian Le Cain, Le Cain will be curating Seeing The Light an exhibition of video and experimental film. Alongside the exhibition Max will present a series of screenings in the performance space at Sample-Studios, which is in the process of being fixed up. Both the exhibition and screenings are part of this year's Cork Film Festival.

To find out more about Le Cain see his wikipedia entry, his personal blog Close Watch, or the film journal that he is the editor of, Experimental Conversations.

TACTIC's Liam Slevin performed with Kevin Tuohy (upcoming guest curator) at sound art event, Sonic Vigil. It was held at the new restored Christchurch at Triskel Arts Centre, the first time Sonic Vigil was held outside of St. Finnbarr's,

I uploaded a few photos to our new flickr account.

A Flag for National Interest?

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: 5pm MONDAY 10th October

'National Interest' is the overall theme of ArtTrail Festival 2011, running from 18th November - 4th December. One of the project sites is the Former Government Buildings, Sullivan's Quay - including TACTIC Gallery on the Second Floor, and exterior areas of the building. Due to the history and location of the building, and its current use as studios, the three vacant flagpoles above the entrance canopy suggested the possibility of an additional project. Now the owners of the building, BAM Construction, have agreed to allow the flagpoles be used for the festival. Three new flags will be selected, printed, and flown for the duration of the ArtTrail Festival.

The Irish Tricolour was designed at a particular moment in Ireland's development, and adopted as the National flag at a later date. If it seeks to represent an ideal situation - peace between the 'Green' and the 'Orange' - rather than a cultural or social history, perhaps it is more a flag of 'National Interest' than of 'National Identity'. Is there cause now to re-examine this flag, to update our National agenda, or to make an entirely new statement of intent?

We invite draft or print-ready design proposals for a new flag.

3 designs will be selected and digitally printed 6ft x 3ft.
Printing will be single-sided on polyester, and the reverse of the image will be visible on the reverse side.
As this will be digitally printed, images and detailed patterns and elements are possible. Proposals that include additional embellishments or hand-made alterations after printing could also be accepted, with consideration to the outdoor location and weather at this time of year. Designs could also be custom shapes taken out of the standard rectangle.
